Oak Tree Nursery

During our Samhain events we started an Oak tree nursery to honour the ancestor oaks who became the ancient bog road in Corlea and all of the oaks which once covered Ireland. There is now only 2% of the land under native woodland and there is a huge need for local native tree nurseries.

We gathered the acorns from one of the few remaining ancient oak forests in Lecarrow, Co. Roscommon and planted these acorns with children and adults in Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre, The National Famine Museum, Strokestown, Gaelscoil Longfoirt, Ballinalee NS, and An GrianĂ¡n NS in Mount Temple, Co. Westmeath.

The new oak trees will grow on in our nursery for a few years before being planted out in nature corridors and woodlands in the area, where they have the potential to grow for up to a thousand years and support up to 5000 species each.
